Today we’re revisiting a fashion favorite — the preppy aesthetic — and this time around, it’s looking way more chic and modern than your grade school uniform! When we think of preppy attire, most of our minds go to all-time television favorites: Clueless and Gossip Girl, and the classic outfits they wore. Perhaps you may also think of golf course, horseback riding or tennis looks, if you’re thinking about a sporty spin on the preppy aesthetic. As fashion changes and evolves, the stereotypical, antiquated school girl look is on the outs, but certain elements of preppy style remain to be styled in new ways for the 2021 fashion girl. I’ve selected some of my favorites from Saks Fifth Avenue; a selection of items you’ll need hanging in your closet if you’re looking to master the preppy aesthetic… this time, with a modern twist!
1. varsity sweaters
Sweaters come in differing styles, colors, and patterns making them addicting to collect, but the varsity sweater’s signature v-neck and cable-knit texture always makes for a standout piece. You can wear these as usual, or tie them over your shoulder on warmer days like an accessory to your casual outfit, for a more polished and suave look. I love the wide sleeves of my varsity sweater from Loulou Studio.
2. bermuda shorts
Start stocking up on bermuda shorts now, because they’re here to stay for spring/summer ’21! Bermuda shorts, also known as mom shorts, are cut to just above or below the knee for a look that can be worn in multiple ways. Pairing this with a tank top, blazer, or sweater makes for a comfortable and trendy outfit — the ones I’m wearing are also from Loulou Studio.
3. sweater vests
Sweater vests are great because of how versatile they are. They can be styled with a button down underneath with jeans, or by itself with shorts. It doesn’t matter the weather or occasion because there will always be a unique way to rock the look!
4. pleated skirts
Outfits incorporating the pleated skirts trend is currently a favorite of mine. The look is comfortable, effortless, and of course stylish. For a cozy day running errands I’d grab my sweatshirt, sneakers, and depending how incognito I want to go, a baseball hat! If it’s a day full of fun and plans, I would put on a blazer, some jewelry and accessories, and high knee boots! There are so many ways to wear pleated skirts, so have some fun experimenting!
